Marques was the first company constituted by the Marques Group, it operates in the sector of civil construction and public works and was founded in 1979 by the couple Marques (Engº Primitivo Marques and Mrs. Maria Manuela Costa Gomes Marques).

The company's headquarters is located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, S. Miguel, and has two branches on the islands of Pico and Faial. Nowadays, Marques, SA is among the largest 500 national companies and is one of the market leaders in terms of regional building, having stood out in the construction of a considerable number of infrastructures in Azores.

The construction industry had potential growth in the last 4 years in the RAA, result of the regional bet in strategic development of the tourism sector. This strategy involves the creation of countless infrastructures that allow to hold a significant increase of the demand in this sector. Though this reality is regional, in the central group, in particular on the islands of Faial and Pico coexisted an additional construction phenomenon due to reconstruction of the earthquake of 1998. Marques currently intend to consolidate and maintain its position of highlight in the RAA and expand for new markets.

Marques, SA represented in 2002, about 17% of the business volume of the sector of construction of the Azores, in the year of 2001 occupied the 8th place of the 100 largest companies of the Azores and in 2002 it occupies the 6th place, being situated at the 2nd place of construction sector of the Azores.

In the national Ranking of 2002 Marques, SA takes the 282 th place of the 500 Largest & Best Companies of Portugal, occupying still in 2002 the 21th place of the largest companies in the Portuguese civil construction industry.

Marques, SA has focused on Safety and Health at Work, as a general principle of prevention, reinforcing in 2003 its equipment of collective protection, intending to prevent accidents of greater severity, especially on height falls.
In future we intend on the implementation of an Integrated System of Quality Management, Environment and Security in Marques, SA.
